What is PASS

Parenting Advice and Support Service (PASS) supports fathers while in Bunbury Prison to reconnect and reengage positively in the life of their children during and after being released from prison.

How does it work

Through one-to-one sessions and an additional 6 group sessions, PASS supports dads in Bunbury Prison to set their own unique parenting goals, then work on ways to make them happen.

What’s the focus?

There’s much more to the role of ‘dad’ beyond simply being the ‘bread winner’ or ‘man of the house’. PASS help Bunbury Prison dads successfully ease back into the family dynamic by being fully present and engaged in the lives of your children.

Every reintegration story matters

PASS is for parents working through a sentence at Bunbury Prison. Through one-on-one and group sessions, we’ll ask participants to question what life will look like when they go back home after a period of time away – sometimes a long time.

How do I ease back into life without throwing out the family dynamic? What can I do to get more involved in the life of my kids, from school life to playtime and all in between? How can I rebuild the connections with my family so I not only engage emotionally with them, but I also feel supported and loved along my journey? Their story matters – together we can write a better tomorrow into existence.

Fall in love with being Dad, again

In many ways, being released from prison is an amazing opportunity to reflect, retool, and restart life as a family man. Parenting is tough for all of us, and can sometimes feel like too heavy a responsibility to shoulder. However, with the support of our PASS team, it’s possible for fathers in Bunbury Prison to open their eyes to a new way of looking at being a dad that could turn their feelings inside out and upside down – in a good way.

Being a parent is a privilege. By looking back and within, we give them an exciting opportunity to see how much more love, joy and satisfaction there is to gain from taking on the role of parenting with both hands and letting themselves experience it in new and rewarding ways. Soon they’ll discover that being a dad with everything you’ve got is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in life.

The focus of our reintegration assistance

The big focus of our Bunbury Prison reintegration programs is supporting fathers to successfully re-enter the community – and stay there. By helping them understand how incarceration impacts their family, and helping them set up a loving, supported life of purpose, together our support for prisoners can reduce their chance of reoffending and putting the positive habits in place to thrive.

Final thoughts on reintegration assistance

As parents move towards being released from prison, we’ll start working through different strategies to get them where they want to go, from counselling services, to parenting and relationships group work, family events and more. We also support PASS participants by giving them access to other Accordwest wraparound services, and if needed, we’ll also link them with other services to build their sense of connection beyond their peers in prison, from peer mentoring, to volunteering and more.
